Rare Japanese Shibayama Sterling Cigarette Case, c.1915
An Edwardian-period sterling cigarette case enriched with
Japanese Shibayama artistry of the Meiji–Taishō era —
a remarkable fusion of East and West in the early
20th century.
The convex front is set with a working compass in the
lower corner, an unusual and ingenious feature.
Across the surface, five insects are meticulously carved and inlaid
in mother-of-pearl, abalone, and semiprecious stones,
their iridescence still vivid more than a century later.
The back is plain and polished, offering contrast
to the ornate front. Inside, the case is finished in matte
vermeil gold and fitted with an elastic cigarette holder.
Dimensions: 3 inches by 2 inches. Weight: 50 grams.
Bearing a full set of Birmingham sterling hallmarks,
confirming English origin and the date letter for 1915.
The case closes securely with a crisp click.
Excellent antique condition commensurate with age.
There are only a few slightest surface marks and dings,
not affecting its beauty.
