A unique and exquisite Shibayama insect pendant locket from circa 1993.
This piece was crafted in Japan and subsequently imported to the United Kingdom.
Shibayama artistry is characterized by a blend of inlay and relief techniques,
which were first employed in Japan during the 18th century
for the embellishment of decorative items and artifacts.
The oval locket features a lid adorned with intricately carved and inlaid insects,
composed of materials such as mother of pearl, abalone,
and various semiprecious stones.
The dimensions of the locket are 59 mm in height, including the bail,
and 33 mm in width.
The front lid bears an inscription from a Japanese jewelry designer or maker,
while the back lid is marked with London import hallmarks,
and the interior of the locket is stamped with "925."
The total weight of the piece is 15.2 grams.
This locket is in excellent condition with signs of tarnishing on the interior.
