Rare Japanese mixed metal Shakudo locket pendant C.1880.
Samurai sword smiths started making this type of jewelry
after samurai society was disbanded and outlawed
with Meiji reform in the late 19th century.
High domed lids show meticulously detailed carving and chase works.
Chrysanthemums in gold, copper, and silver
with mountain in gold and waterfall in copper crafted on one lid.
The other side depicts a group of countryside folks
going away from a viewer.
They wear traditional Japanese hats and cloths
and carry umbrella, hand hoe, backpack, hay.
There are engraved maker's hieroglyphs.
The interior is silver with antique patina.
The locket is 31 mm (1 1/4") diameter,
36 mm (1 7/16") tall including the bail.
Total weight is 13.9 grams.
Excellent antique condition commensurate with age.
