Antique handcrafted Tibetan silver necklace
dating to late Qing period (circa 1880).
Tibetan artists were renowned for skillful silverwork
and use of natural stones symbolizing protection.
They combined local turquoise with Mediterranean coral
brought via long trade routes through India and China.
Jewelry of this type was heirloom property,
passed down through generations and rarely traded.
Authentic surviving examples are highly collectible.
This sophisticated necklace features a hand-wrought
round filigree silver medallion representing the Sun,
set with a 9/16-inch salmon coral cabochon
in a zig-zag bezel, about 2½ × 2½ inches overall.
Suspended below is a 3-inch drop with coral bead
and large malachite bead capped by enameled filigree rosettes,
ending in an engraved silver ghau bell
(traditional amuletic chime form).
The central medallion joins by four chains
to two chased silver plaques with oxblood coral centers,
each about 2⅞ × 1⅞ inches.
Two long chain drops, about 5¼ inches each,
finish with coral rondelles, turquoise beads,
and conical filigree caps terminating in ghau bells
with working tongues.
Upper chain sections feature ⅞-inch coral rondelles
and turquoise beads with ornate filigree cones.
A chased silver link chain completes the necklace,
long enough to slip over the head.
