They were popular in the Victorian era and were often given as gifts to travelers and visitors to Switzerland. They are a beautiful example of Swiss craftsmanship, and they are highly prized by collectors today.
The box with hinged lid features fine polychrome enamel miniature picture of a milk woman with 2 kids with a medieval town square on the background. The rectangular miniature is 53 X 34 mm. It surrounded with consecutive chased and enamel frames. The sides of the box adorned with the cobalt blue enamel. The back lid has cobalt blue guilloche enamel with oval foliage pattern in the center. The cobalt blue center surrounded with the frames similar to ones on the front lid.
The whole box is 3 1/8" long, 2 1/4" wide, 3/8" thick. It is hallmarked STERLING inside. Total weight is 115.4 grams.
Excellent antique condition commensurate with age. Enamel bears light scratches of normal wear. There are some scratches on inside gold-plated surface.
