A sought after large Cavalier Charles Spaniel micro mosaic 14K gold brooch C.1890.

Well-crafted micromosaic spaniel is standing on green grass
on beveled black onyx background.
The glass tesserae of the micro mosaic are of particularly small size
which indicates high quality of craftsmanship.
The onyx base is bezel set into 14K gold filigree open back frame.

There is C clasp with tubular hinge matching the period.
A number 155 inscribed on the back of onyx base.

The brooch measures 45 mm (2 1/4") wide, 37 mm (1 1/2") high.

There is no hallmark on the brooch, tested 14K gold.
Total weight is 19.7 grams.

Excellent antique condition commensurate with age.
Gold covered with beautiful antique patina.
The onyx has some superficial scratching appropriate for normal usage.

The regal Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was one of favorite dogs among royalties.
Queen's Victoria first dog was King Charles Spaniel named Dash.

The term Grand Tour refers to 17th through 19th century custom
of a trip by young people from Great Britain to Europe, especially to Italy.
While being there they are buying pieces of traditional local craft,
such as micro mosaic.
