A rare and finely executed Japanese locket pendant
combining Shakudo mixed-metal relief with traditional
Shibayama surface-applied relief work on a luminous
mother-of-pearl ground.
The front lid depicts a detailed rickshaw scene with two
mixed-metal figures in traditional Japanese garments,
one holding an umbrella, set within a gilt landscape.
The reverse features a crane among flowering vines, with
the bird rendered in dark patinated silver and the leaves
and stems executed as Shibayama decorative elements
applied in raised relief over the shell background.
This raised, applied construction is characteristic of
Shibayama work used on Japanese export jewelry of the period.
The oval locket is mounted in gilded brass with
decoratively engraved bezel sides.
Chain is not included and is shown for display only.
