Very rare intricate Shibayama insects 9K gold cufflinks C.1890.
Shibayama work is a combination of inlay and relief.
It was first used in Japan in the 18th century for decoration ornaments and objects.
The insect motifs on these cufflinks are incredibly detailed.
Each insect is made up of dozens of tiny pieces of mother of pearl
that have been carefully fitted together to create a realistic and lifelike image.
The legs of the insects carved onto the gold surface around.
The oval fronts of the cufflinks are 18 X 13 mm.
The rear links are made of nephrite jade 23 X 8 mm.
The backs of the cufflinks are stamped with
maker's hallmarked and British 9C for 9K gold.
Total weight is 6.5 grams.
Excellent antique condition commensurate with age.
