Rare museum quality antique Victorian Egyptian revival French 18K gold, enamel scarf ring C.1880.
The ring represents intricate craftsmanship with various techniques such as carving, chasing, polychrome enamel. The background of enamel is textured with hand applied chasing.
Hand painted enamel on the front depicts a pharaoh in his official garment. It is possible the face was a custom miniature portrait of the person who ordered the ring. The back enamel masterfully renders a few springs with blue flowers and green leaves.
The ring measures 3/4" or 20 mm diameter. It weighs 4.8 grams. There are no hallmarks, acid tested 18K gold.
Excellent antique condition commensurate with age.
Egyptian motifs widespread starting late 1700's after Napoleon's military campaign in North Africa. They received another boost after excavations and following tours to Egypt starting in 1830's.
