Very rare American gunmetal chatelaine C 1880 – 1890’s.

This 7 1/4” chatelaine is definitely part of the history.
A great deal of the jewelry was made at that period of time
from barrels of Civil war guns or rifles.
A very few pieces left in good shape since iron alloys are prone to oxidation.

What makes this chatelaine especially desired is sheer number of gunmetal pieces
(5 total), the turquoise embellishments, coiled snake top.

The top is masterfully wrought with carved eyes and scales on the head of the snake.
It measures 2 1/4” wide, 1” tall.
There is a C clasp on the back.

Shiny matte black gunmetal round trinket box locket adorned with 7 turquoise cabochons.
It measures 1 1/2” diameter, 1 7/8” tall with bail and gold filled ring,
and suspended on 2 1/2” gunmetal chain with dog clip clasp.

Oval gunmetal slide open locket adorned with 10 turquoise cabochons.
The locket has 2 mirrors inside, surrounded with silk cord twisted
around filigree metal spiral.
It is 2 1/4” X 1 3/8”, 3” tall with gold filled bail and ring.
It is suspended on 3 1/2” gunmetal chain with dog clip clasp.

Gunmetal notepad measures 1 13/16” X 1 1/4”.
The front cover is adorned with 8 turquoise cabochons.
It is hinged and swings open when a little pencil is removed
from it’s holder.
There are paper pages inside, darkened with age tinted rose
color on the cut.
The whole notepad dangle is 2 1/8” including the bail.
It is suspended on 2 1/2” gunmetal chain with dog clip clasp.

There is a retractable pencil connected to the same dog clip.
The pencil shell is also made of gunmetal
adorned with 6 turquoise cabochons.
The lead holding tube is in its extended position
and cannot be retracted, there is no lead in it.
The pencil is 1 7/8” long including the gold filled ring.

Each pendant can be worn on a separate necklace.

There are some small oxidation markings on all the gunmetal surfaces
normal for gunmetal piece of this age.

Very good antique condition.
